Combating Diabetes - Must Not Depend on Medications Alone.
Apr 07, 2026
"Doctor, my diabetes is already well controlled, I take my medications regularly and my blood sugar readings are OK, why are you still constantly urging me to still make significant changes to my lifestyle and dietary habits?", is something I hear often during coaching sessions.
Although I do coaching for people with a whole range of chronic diseases, and not just people with diabetes, I have a special 'heart' for people with diabetes. Because so many of them could do so much more, in terms of preventing and reducing future complications, many of them are 'satisfied' with merely achieving acceptable blood sugar control from taking diabetes medications alone, without doing the necessary to change and improve any aspects of their lifestyle habits that are clearly sub-optimal for combating diabetes fully.
Tears of regret of missed opportunity - "If Only .... "
It is not uncommon for me to have people crying tears of regret during coaching sessions when they realised they could have avoided or at least delayed or reduced the severity of the serious diabetes complications they were facing. They often would tell me, "Doctor, if only I had done more, and earlier, on working on my lifestyle habits, I may not be ....."
Don't win battles and lose the war against diabetes.
So, if you have diabetes, I would like to say to you. "Don't win battles and lose the war". Combating diabetes is more than just winning the daily battles against sugar spikes, but is a lifelong battle against the many serious complications of diabetes. No pills, be it prescription drugs or supplements, would ever be enough. If one is serious about doing everything that he or she is willing and able to, to prevent and minimise diabetes complications, comprehensive lifestyle and eating habits improvement is a must-do, not just a good-to-do.
Combating Diabetes - depending on medications alone is never good enough.
Let Habits be Your Medicine.
