Is there a pill that can cure insulin resistance? Dr Chan answers.
Jul 05, 2026
Is there a pill that can cure insulin resistance? The short answer is: no. There is no pill, medication or supplement that can truly and fully reverse insulin resistance without tackling the underlying cause.
This is one of the questions I get asked often, especially by patients newly diagnosed with insulin resistance or prediabetes. Watch my short video below, or read on for the full answer.
Why No Pill Can Fully Reverse Insulin Resistance
Some medications and supplements may improve insulin sensitivity to some degree. But you cannot expect a full, lasting reversal of insulin resistance from a pill alone, without addressing what is actually driving it in the first place.
What Actually Causes Insulin Resistance
For most people, insulin resistance is caused by modifiable lifestyle factors. Diet. Exercise. Sleep. Stress. These are underlying causes that led to the build up of insulin resistance in the first place.
For a smaller group of people, insulin resistance is caused by certain medical conditions, or by certain medications they are taking for other conditions. If that is your situation, the underlying condition or medication itself needs to be addressed with your doctor.
Either way, the underlying cause has to be tackled. A pill on its own does not do that.
Can Medications or Supplements Help At All?
Yes, to some degree. I am not against medication, and I prescribe it myself where appropriate. Some medications and supplements may improve insulin sensitivity somewhat.
But here is what I see again and again, in my years coaching patients to fight chronic disease through lifestyle change: people wrongly believe a pill can do the work that only an improved lifestyle can do. It cannot. Not fully, and not for good.
But Can I Suggest a More Useful Question to Ask
The real question is not which pill, medication or supplement might improve your insulin resistance. The real question is: what in your current lifestyle and eating habits is driving the insulin resistance, and what are you doing about it?
If you have insulin resistance, can I encourage you to do this first. Look closely at your current lifestyle and eating habits. Identify what may be driving the problem. Then change and improve it.
There is no magic pill that can reverse insulin resistance without you changing your lifestyle.
Lifestyle Change Is Not Easy, But It Is Entirely Possible
I know lifestyle change is never easy. Most people are reluctant to change habits they have lived with for years.
But let me encourage you. Lifestyle change is entirely possible, it may not be easy at the start, but you can be certain that it will get easier and easier.
Every person with insulin resistance has different underlying causes, lifestyle and eating habits change must be personalised. Unlock the full potential of your lifestyle and eating habits as medicine, and use that to tackle insulin resistance at its root.

Frequently Asked Question
Q: Can insulin resistance be reversed naturally?
A: For most people, yes, insulin resistance may potentially be improved and even reversed through sustained changes to diet, exercise, sleep and stress management. It is not guaranteed for everyone, and how much it improves depends on the individual and the underlying cause.
