Dr Chan's thoughts about "Can diabetes be reversed?"
"In the past 10+ years, in my work as a lifestyle medicine focused medical doctor, coaching patients with diabetes, this is one of the most commonly asked and also most important question I get asked by people with type 2 diabetes."
The medical and scientific community have all agreed on the answer a long time ago, that it is clearly possible for type 2 diabetes to be reversed in some, not all cases. And that there are many factors that affect the chances of success in reversing diabetes.
But there are a lot of noise and confusion surrounding this question, especially on social media where answers to the question, 'can diabetes be reversed?' are often answered in a way that is overly-simplified, overly-generalised or often too absolute, often missing the important nuances and caveats.
The answer to the question of "can diabetes be reversed?" should be "It depends, ...." but that is not what most people like to hear. And many actually get upset or even angry with me whenever I reply them, "It depends, ....."
Over the years, I have tried my best to help people with type 2 diabetes get a simple enough to understand but necessarily nuanced answer to this very important question of whether diabetes can be reversed or not so as to encourage them to take action as early as possible to attempt to reverse their diabetes as best as they could.
