Can Diabetes Be Reversed Permanently or Only Temporarily? Dr Chan Answers FAQs

Can diabetes be reversed permanently or only temporarily? For most people with type 2 diabetes, remission is more often temporary than permanent. Whether it lasts depends on whether the lifestyle habits that achieved it can be maintained over time.

The Short Answer

Diabetes remission is more often temporary than permanent.

Some people sustain it for many years. Others see their blood sugar rise again within months. It varies widely from person to person.

The key difference is almost always this: whether the lifestyle habits that led to remission can be continued in a sustainable way.

Achieving remission is not easy. Sustaining it is often even harder.

Why Remission Often Does Not Last

I often see this in my patients. They work hard, make real changes, achieve remission. They feel great. Rightfully proud.

But sustaining those changes over months and years is a different challenge altogether. Life gets in the way. Old habits creep back. And when habits slip, blood sugar starts to rise again.

This does not mean reversal is not worth pursuing. It absolutely is. It means the goal is not just to achieve remission. The goal is to build a lifestyle that sustains it.

What Determines How Long Diabetes Remission Lasts?

Every person with diabetes is different. In my clinical experience, those who sustain remission the longest tend to share a few things in common: they started their reversal journey early, they made meaningful and lasting changes to their lifestyle and eating habits, and they understood that remission is not a destination but an ongoing commitment.

Those who struggle to sustain remission are often those who made short-term changes for short-term results. A strict diet for a few months. Significant weight loss, then gradual regain. The remission was real. But the habits were not built to last.

The window for reversing type 2 diabetes does not stay open forever. Starting early, and building habits that last, gives you the best chance of sustaining remission long term.

The Important Question About Diabetes Reversal

Here is the thing. Asking whether remission is permanent or temporary is understandable. But it may not be the most useful question.

The more useful question is this:

"What kind of lifestyle habits can I realistically improve that will help me achieve diabetes remission and sustain for the long term?"

When coaching my patients, I find that this shift in thinking makes all the difference. The goal is not to achieve remission and then relax. The goal is to build habits that make remission the natural outcome of how you live.

That is a very different approach. And it is a far more powerful one.

Your habits can be powerful medicine. But only if they are sustainable.

What Should You Do Next?

Reversing type 2 diabetes may be possible if lifestyle habits are changed and improved early enough, appropriately, adequately, and sustainably.

But many people go into the reversal journey with incomplete information. They know some things, miss others, and fall into avoidable mistakes. That is why the essential basics matter.

Every person with type 2 diabetes should equip themselves with the must-know of diabetes reversal: what it actually means medically, what the common mistakes are, what the key success factors are, and what to look out for regardless of which diet or method you choose.

The following is the full transcript of the video above.

Diabetes reversal or diabetes remission once achieved, is it permanent or only temporary? The short answer is: Diabetes remission is more often temporary than permanent. Some people sustain it for many years. Many see their diabetes return within a few months, especially if the lifestyle habits that led to remission are not maintained. Achieving remission is not easy and sustaining it is often even harder. The duration for which remission or reversal is maintained varies from person to person.

Some are able to sustain remission for many, many years, and they will even consider it to be permanent. But the risk of diabetes returning is always there, the risk of diabetes returning always remains. Many, however, are unable to sustain remission beyond months or just a few years, and may need to go back to taking medications to control their blood sugar, especially if the lifestyle habits that led to remission are not maintained. I hope you found this series of short and concise FAQs useful.
